Art Every Day

About those Flying Monkeys…

I’m Susan Moore, a native of San Diego, currently living in Boise, ID, having escaped from Southern California in 2004 and never looked back! The seasons here are perfect–about the time you’re tired of winter, the crocus are popping up all over the yard. When you’re just about camped out for the summer, one morning you notice there’s a chill in the air and the Locust trees are turning yellow.

I was an art major at San Diego State University (the first time around), but decided to go into accounting and software instead, leaving all artistic endeavors behind. That was in the 80s and 90s. In 2000, I began painting and drawing again, and in particular re-discovered printmaking.

Flying Monkey Studio is a joint venture between myself and my husband John. We have sound equipment in every room in the house (including a hole through the wall in the dining room with cables snaked through to the porch so we can listen to the birds in the winter!) Maybe in payment for all my patience with his equipment, John built an art studio downstairs and found a press and modified it for me. Our plans for 2010 are to expand the space again so I have more room to teach and to work on larger prints. He’s a keeper.

What’s with the studio name? Well, we were both born in the year of the monkey, so we’ve always collected monkeys–art, figurines, etc. Also, my DH is a really funny guy, and is wont to say things like “that will happen when monkeys fly out of my ….” You get the picture. So, when it came time to name our studio it came to me in a flash that we had to be the Flying Monkey Studio. And, the domain was available so there you go.
